Dr Michele Barker is an artist and academic working in the field of media arts with a focus on experimental cinema as a way to explore both human and nonhuman movement and perception.  

Developing projects that integrate a vast range of technological platforms, her works include the seminal CD-ROM, Præternatural, selected for exhibition in ‘Vidarte’, the Mexican Biennale of Electronic Art, 2002 and ‘Contact Zones’ a touring exhibition of CD-ROM art in 2001. The work is now in held in the Rose Goldsen Archive of New Media Art, Cornell University.  In 2004, she held an Artist-in Residency at Eyebeam New York. Out of this she developed a multi-channel work, Struck, which has been exhibited extensively in Australia including a solo show at the Art Gallery of NSW, the US and China. Barker’s creative work and research has been presented at major international conferences and galleries including ‘Future Bodies’, Cologne, ‘Vidarte’ Mexico and ‘New Constellations: Art and Science’, The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Taipei, The Photographer’s Gallery, London; FILE Festival, Sao Paolo and the Museum of Art, Seoul. She has collaborated extensively with Anna Munster for over 20 years, with recent works including évasion, (UTS Gallery, Sydney, 2014), an 8-channel responsive installation working between dance, performance and the moving image; and the multi-channel interactive work, HokusPokus (Watermans Gallery London, 2012), which explores the relations between perception, magic and early moving image technologies and techniques. This work was chosen to represent Australasia as part of the International Festival of Digital Art and the Cultural Olympiad in London in 2012.

In 2017 they were commissioned to create pull for Experimenta Make Sense Triennial of Media Art, touring Australia from 2017–20.
